WX trends: Leadership in 2025 – it’s time to be bold

Our workplace experience (WX) trends series looks at recent news articles, videos, social media posts, and thought leadership pieces on workplace experience. You’ll also hear from our experts on what’s trending.

Organizational leadership in 2025 needs a new playbook. We’re seeing a move towards leadership strategies that will support dynamic teams – an approach that will help organizations thrive in a landscape that’s constantly changing. We’ve already taken a look at how AI (and AI agents in particular) and new approaches to employee wellbeing will change the workplace this year.

So, leaders, are you ready for 2025? We’ve looked for some of the best tips – including from our own CEO – to help you make 2025 a success.

Complexity is the new normal…

The workplace is changing faster than ever. Think about it: Global events, new tech, and employees who expect more. Leaders are navigating unprecedented levels of complexity.

Fortune describes this era, for leaders, as “reinvent or die”. They argue that transformative leadership – an approach that combines innovation, adaptability, and resilience to thrive in uncertainty – is a must for 2025.

Today’s leaders need to strike a balance between classic skills (like strategy and stakeholder management) and newer ones (like tech literacy and emotional intelligence) to stay effective. We live in a world where hybrid work has become the norm, workplaces have become more multi-generational, and businesses are grappling with fast-changing priorities and needs.

Future-ready leaders are redefining the CEO role, says Fortune, with a bigger focus on inclusivity, continuous learning, and adaptability.

Traits like curiosity, determination, and the ability to see challenges before they hit are becoming must-haves. Emotional intelligence is also crucial. Leaders who can make tough calls while showing empathy are the ones who build trust and stability, even in chaotic times.

And the old-school “command and control” leadership style? It’s being replaced by a collaborative approach that values diverse voices and collective decision-making.

Leading with innovation: The human-centric approach

In 2025, impactful leadership is about a truly human-centric approach that empowers innovation at every level. Dr Jason Walker, writing in Forbes, offers some advice on how to achieve just that.

Walker points to innovative and transformative action being the keys “to spark creativity, ignite motivation, sharpen focus, and set the stage for meaningful and sustained success.” He envisions tomorrow’s leaders as role models and incredible listeners. They lead with authenticity, not just a title, and they’re willing to break down barriers to foster a culture of collaboration across the entire organization.

Because let’s face it, collaboration is vital. When we work together across different teams, we can find those bold, innovative solutions to the complex challenges we face.

“The days of top-down leadership are over,” says Appspace CEO Tony DiBenedetto.

“In today’s workplace, the best ideas come from diverse perspectives and collective decision-making. Leaders who create an environment of trust and collaboration will inspire their teams to tackle challenges in bold, innovative ways. That’s where the spark happens, and it’s magical!”

Put communications and culture at the top of your agenda

Want to build a truly thriving workplace in 2025? Then it’s time to prioritize communication and culture. The Sloan Review emphasizes just how crucial these elements are, stating that the challenges around them are some of the toughest leaders face.

But how do you actually build a strong culture and communicate effectively? Here’s the thing: it’s about more than just sending emails or holding meetings. It’s about creating a genuine connection with your team. This means clearly communicating your values, encouraging openness, and fostering a culture of continuous learning. Instead of always offering solutions, try asking more questions. And here’s a big one: let’s ditch the “busy” badge of honor.

The Sloan Review suggests a simple but powerful shift: “Stop talking about how busy you are. Start talking about what you’re achieving.” When we focus on results, it not only inspires others but also creates space for them to focus on impact, not just activity.

Another essential tip? Communicate change effectively by being transparent about how decisions are made. When you bring employees into the process, they feel more empowered and engaged.

Appspace CEO Tony DiBenedetto sums it up perfectly: “Leadership in 2025 is about creating a culture where communication isn’t just about telling – it’s about connecting. That means clearly sharing your values, being transparent about decisions, and shifting the focus from activity to impact.

When leaders truly listen to their teams and celebrate their achievements, they create an environment where everyone feels valued, empowered, and ready to innovate.”
