5 trends that will impact the future workforce

5 trends that will impact the future workforce

As we mark halfway through 2024, the digital workplace is evolving, reshaping how we work, collaborate, and achieve our professional goals. From AI-driven efficiency to remote collaboration technologies, the future of work is brimming with innovations that promise to make our work lives more productive, flexible, and engaging.

With these advancements, the question isn’t just about what digital workplace technologies will emerge but how they’ll transform the workplace culture, employee engagement, and operational workflows. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, a business leader, or someone curious about the future of work, diving into the digital workplace trends of the future will equip you with the insights needed to thrive in the rapidly changing professional landscape. Let’s explore what’s on the horizon.

1. AI-powered features

Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to be at the forefront of driving efficiency within the digital workplace. And workers are embracing the change. According to the 2024 Workplace Experience Trends and Insights Report conducted by Appspace, 84% of respondents said they believe there are opportunities to leverage AI in their organization.

The Appspace report found that employees think AI would be helpful:

  • To summarize meetings (54%)
  • To generate content (30%)
  • To provide insights into how employees are feeling (25%)

AI-powered features like predictive analytics, natural language processing, and machine learning algorithms are automating routine tasks, optimizing workflows, and personalizing employee experiences. This technology allows for the analysis of large data sets, enabling more informed decision-making and freeing up valuable time for employees to focus on creative and strategic tasks.

2. Remote collaboration tools

The demand for remote collaboration tools has surged, a trend that’s expected to continue throughout 2024 and beyond. Platforms that offer video conferencing, project management, and real-time document editing are becoming more sophisticated, breaking down geographical barriers and promoting teamwork. These tools facilitate seamless communication and collaboration among remote teams, ensuring productivity remains high regardless of physical locations.

This is a good thing as tech satisfaction in the workplace has taken a hit, according to the Appspace report. In 2023, only 29% of respondents said they’re completely satisfied with their company’s workplace tools and technologies, compared to 39% in 2021. And remote workers have been feeling more disconnected. The top struggles for those working remotely are feeling a sense of camaraderie with coworkers (23%) and feeling connected and engaged with work (20%).

3. Hybrid and flexible work models

Hybrid and flexible work models are redefining traditional office setups, offering employees the choice to work from different locations and at varying times. This approach to work is enhancing work-life balance and employee satisfaction, contributing to higher retention rates.

Organizations adopting these models are seeing an increase in productivity and are becoming more attractive to top talent who prioritize flexibility in their employment.

The office is making a comeback, however.  At the end of 2023, the Appspace survey saw a 926% increase in the number of respondents who work fully in-office compared to 2022. Nearly six in 10 (59%) hybrid and fully in-office respondents have personally received mandates from their companies to either start coming to the office or increase the number of days they come in. While a majority are in favor of the recent return-to-office (64%), over half of respondents (54%) — including RTO supporters — still agree that “going to the office feels like a waste of time.”

4. Evolving security landscape

According to Gartner, in 2023, 51% of organizations worldwide did not have a ransomware incident response plan. As the digital workplace expands, so does the complexity of the security landscape. Protecting company data and ensuring privacy in an increasingly remote work environment requires advanced cybersecurity measures. Encryption, multi-factor authentication, and endpoint security are becoming standard practices, alongside continuous education on cybersecurity awareness for employees.

5. Contribution to ESG Initiatives

Digital workplace trends are aligning with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, emphasizing sustainability and corporate responsibility. This is a positive step in the right direction as according to the Appspace report. 72% of all respondents said a company’s ESG strategy is very or somewhat important to them. Adding to that, 65% of in-office and hybrid respondents agreed that they care about their office’s energy consumption habits.

Digital tools and platforms are reducing the need for physical resources, lowering carbon footprints, and promoting social inclusion by offering remote work opportunities. Organizations are leveraging technology to report on ESG goals, showcasing their commitment to not just profitability, but also social and environmental causes.
